The free jazz trio Undertow has been entertaining audiences around Chicago since 2004.
Though numerous Chicago free jazzers have performed with Undertow, the core of the group since its origins has been Michael Baker (bass and keys), Josh Beatty (saxophones), and Henry Mayer (drums and electronics).
The diverse musical influences of these core members are the key to Undertow's unique sound. Baker, Beatty, and Mayer have developed a distinctive rapport that enables them to filter their influences through a collective sensibility of musicality and form. This convergence inspires the diverse styles Undertow explores in its performance, ranging from swing to atonal soundscapes to groove to rock and beyond.
